Monika Blidy, The old man and his will-last book of Jurij Brězan "Der alte Mann und das enge Weite"

The last book of Jurij Brezan published after his death in 2006 is a buckle fastening his legacy as a literary testament. The main character is an old writer living alone in a beautifully situated house on a hill. From this perspective he describes a history “macrocosm” and people who depend on it, he comparing it to the “microcosm” of his garden constantly. Although neither the protagonist and a place of action are named in the text, a reader identifies the old writer with the author easily, and associate the house on a hill with a Brezan’s house in a small village Horni Hajnk, in Upper Lusatia. This relationship between the writer’s small world and the great outside world become a metaphor of Lusatia homeland in German country.
