Bożena Itoya, Bilingualism as an Obstacle in the Development of Upper Sorbian Lexicogaphy.

The article contains reflections about the theory of dictionary making – the domain widely developed in contemporary European linguistics and almost absent in Sorbian studies. The first part of the text contains examples of bilingualism in Lusatia and positive or negative evaluation of these phenomena. Secondly, the author discusses the level of development of contemporary European linguistics and presents the basic linguistic and metalinguistic terminology. Those informations are used when describing the situation of Upper Sorbian dictionary making in the third part of the text. Next three sections deal with achievements and shortcomings in Upper Sorbiam lexicography and metalexicography. Simultaneously, the author highlights the need of creating the Sorbian Dictionary and this is the key issue of the article. The advantages and disadvantages of a dictionary that would not be a Sorbian – German lexicon are being analyzed from the point of view of the linguist and it's potential utility for Sorbian people as well as being supported by opinions of Sorbian lexicographers. In the summary, which is the seventh part of the article, the author points out the threats for the prestige and status of Sorbian language that steam from the lack of Sorbian Dictionary.
